Teaching at the Intersections of Immigration and Education:
A Guide for Higher Education Faculty
This guide provides higher education faculty with resources to deepen their understanding of how immigration policy shapes the educational experiences of students in the United States. Faculty across educational content areas can use these materials to develop and enhance coursework for pre-service and in-service educators, ensuring they are better prepared to support immigrant-origin students. At its core, this guide aims to affirm educators’ commitment to equitable access to education and the rights of immigrant children and their families.
As of this writing, immigration is not a required topic for educator certification in any state in the US. Yet students with immigrant histories deserve to see their contributions and identities reflected in the curriculum. All students benefit from understanding how immigration has shaped our communities and society. Educators and school systems also need to build structures that keep immigrant students and families safe, supported, and seen.
To support this work, this guide offers research and multimodal resources that critically examine how immigration intersects with schooling, educational policy, and student experiences. Its sections include:
Articles from academic journals and popular sources
Reports and books
Artwork
Podcasts and videos
Policy guidance
We invite you to explore the guide and consider how it can enrich your teaching and strengthen the preparation of future educators.
