Immigration in Early Childhood Education
This professional development module equips PreK-2nd grade educators in building the tools and knowledge to better support our youngest students and their immigrant families
All early childhood settings—including public, private, and religious preschools, Head Start programs, childcare centers, and community-based organizations—play a critical role in offering children and their immigrant families a sense of safety, belonging, and trust.
Through this module, educators will explore ways to create welcoming and nurturing learning environments grounded in culturally and linguistically responsive practices for our youngest immigrant-origin students and their families. Educators will learn how to:
Examine their own stances and assumptions about immigration to adopt a strengths-based approach towards students and families.
Recognize and uplift families’ expertise by drawing on their funds of knowledge.
Integrate translanguaging practices into policies and pedagogies.
Use children’s literature to engage early childhood students in co-constructing “difficult knowledge.”
